Understanding the Microsoft Security Stack

MSP WEBINAR · ON-DEMAND · 34 MINS

Cole Kaparos, Microsoft 365 Solutions Architect, inforcer

Cole Kaparos, Microsoft 365 Solutions Architect at inforcer, argues that Microsoft 365 Business Premium should be a standard MSP offering because one license can replace a stack of separate security tools. Drawing on years on the Microsoft licensing team at Pax8, Cole walks through Entra ID, Intune and Autopilot, Defender for Business, Defender for Office 365 Safe Links and Safe Attachments, and Purview, then covers a device code phishing scenario, the consolidation conversation with customers and a recommended rollout order.

Key takeaways

1

Business Premium adds the security layer. Business Basic and Standard are productivity suites. Business Premium adds Entra ID P1, Intune, Defender for Business and Purview on top, which is why Microsoft positions it as the hero SKU for SMBs.

2

Consolidation risk comes from bad configuration. Spreading security across nine tools does not help if none of them is configured well. When something breaks, checking one Microsoft platform is faster than hopping between four or five.

3

Device code phishing exposes the Business Standard gap. A fake Microsoft page can steal a session token through device code flow. Business Standard has no Conditional Access to stop it, while Entra ID P1 in Business Premium can block that flow.

4

Get left of boom right first. Configuring Entra ID and Intune correctly keeps most threat actors out before an attack starts, so EDR, SOC or threat detection and response tools only handle the small share that slips through.

5

Roll out identity first, then devices. The recommended order is Entra ID, Intune, Defender, then SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams, with Teams often brought forward so people can communicate. Purview and Copilot come once that foundation is in place.
