Understanding ISO 27001

MSP WEBINAR · ON-DEMAND · 47 MINS

Raul Qais, Vice President ANZ, inforcer; Jason Maricchiolo, Managing Director, ISO365; Nathan Atkins, Head of Cloud Enablement, inforcer

Jason Maricchiolo, Managing Director at ISO365, explains why ISO 27001 has moved from a government and enterprise requirement to the ticket to play for MSPs of any size. Raul Qais and Nathan Atkins of inforcer join the fireside chat. The session covers the four annex control areas, the three-year audit cycle, the Microsoft 365 fundamentals auditors check (Intune, MFA, Defender, patching), reporting as audit evidence, and the defensive and offensive ROI of certification.

Key takeaways

1

ISO 27001 is the ticket to play. Certification does not guarantee a win, but prospects need a verified secure baseline, often for their own cyber insurance, and MSPs that cannot show one see deals drop off early.

2

ISO 27001 is not only technical controls. The annex has four areas: organizational, people, physical and technological controls. Onboarding and offboarding checklists and physical office access are common failure points outside the technology stack.

3

Certification is a three-year cycle, not a project. Year one ends with the stage one and stage two certification audits. Surveillance audits follow in years two and three, and stale risks or a missing internal audit bring non-conformities that can end in suspension.

4

Intune and MFA make audits far easier. Auditors look for corporate devices enrolled and compliant in Intune, MFA on for everyone, email scanning for malicious links and on-time patching. BYOD laptops are allowed but take more work.

5

Certification ROI is defensive and offensive. Defensive ROI, keeping existing work when a top-five client demands certification, makes up about 60 to 65% of ISO365's business. Offensive ROI comes from tenders and RFPs, but only if you sell it.
