The tenant is the new server: why Microsoft governance is critical infrastructure for MSPs

MSP WEBINAR · ON-DEMAND · 51 MINS

Dakota McElliot, M365 Solutions Architect, inforcer

Dakota McElliot, M365 Solutions Architect at inforcer, argues that the Microsoft 365 tenant is the new server and needs the same patching, monitoring and hardening MSPs once applied to servers. The session covers why tenant governance must be a recurring service (Microsoft made 50 changes to Entra ID, Intune and two Defender services in 12 months), why identity is the new perimeter and MFA alone falls short, and how golden baselines, drift alerts and CIS-aligned tenant assessments make that governance repeatable across customers.

Key takeaways

1

The tenant now holds what the server held. Data now sits in SharePoint, OneDrive and Exchange Online, devices in Intune and identities in Entra ID, so patching, monitoring, hardening and backup have to follow the workload into the tenant.

2

Tenant hardening is never a one-time project. Drift comes from the MSP's own engineers, customer admins and, above all, Microsoft, which made 50 changes to Entra ID, Intune, Defender for Office 365 and Defender for Business in 12 months.

3

An unpatched tenant is an unpatched server. Asked how many servers they leave unpatched and unmonitored, MSP owners almost always say zero because it would be a fireable offense. The tenant that replaced the server deserves the same standard.

4

MFA alone is now table stakes. Microsoft's figure that MFA stops over 99% of unauthorized sign-in attempts is real but incomplete. Attackers now use adversary-in-the-middle phishing, token theft and MFA fatigue, so identity needs layered controls: Conditional Access, phishing-resistant authentication, Intune device compliance and token protection.

5

Manual tenant standardization breaks at scale. Documentation, SOPs and a few senior engineers just about cover 10 customers and stop working at 50. The standardization process itself is sound; doing it by hand across every tenant is what fails.
