The Modern SMB: Building Success on SaaS, Security, and Productivity with Microsoft

MSP WEBINAR · ON-DEMAND · 60 MINS

Graham Morrison, Microsoft 365 Team Lead, inforcer; Graham Stead, Founder, Growth Habits; Tom Lovell, Virtual CTO, Infinity Group

Graham Morrison, Microsoft 365 Team Lead at inforcer, argues that MSPs grow by standardizing SMB customers on Microsoft 365 Business Premium and turning projects into recurring revenue tied to business outcomes. Graham Stead of Growth Habits and Tom Lovell of Infinity Group join. The session covers consolidating onto Intune, Entra ID P1 and Defender for Business, Secure Score as a customer metric, roadmap as a service, outcome-based accountability, and how Infinity Group uses inforcer to hold client Secure Scores between 70 and 80%.

Key takeaways

1

SMB customers buy trust, not security tools. Graham Morrison says SMBs want three things: secure infrastructure, costs that feel right and IT that helps generate revenue. They typically do not care whether protection comes from Microsoft, SentinelOne or another vendor.

2

Business Premium already covers the core SMB security stack. It includes Intune, Entra ID P1 with Conditional Access, Defender for Business and Defender for Office 365, which share signals as an XDR. Adding the Defender and Purview suites reaches E5-level security without the full E5 cost.

3

Roadmap as a service turns projects into recurring revenue. Scope projects against where the customer wants to be in two or three years, for example 120 days over 24 months, and the customer commits to five days a month under a managed service agreement.

4

Accountability to customer KPIs sets an MSP apart. Graham Stead says Secure Score alone no longer differentiates because many MSPs already use it. Learn the KPIs a customer's board uses, such as bid win rate for architects, and consider tying part of the fee to them.

5

Holding a Secure Score target takes ongoing management. Infinity Group aims to hold client Secure Scores between 70 and 80%. Tom Lovell says Lighthouse, Microsoft 365 Desired State Configuration and homegrown JSON scripts never fixed ongoing management at scale until the team found inforcer in 2023.
