Differentiate your IT services

MSP WEBINAR · ON-DEMAND · 61 MINS

James Davis, Chief Strategy Officer, The TSP Advisory; Alex Lavermicocca, inforcer

James Davis, Chief Strategy Officer at The TSP Advisory, argues that the generic one-size-fits-all managed services package is dead and that MSPs differentiate by understanding their clients' businesses, not just their infrastructure. Alex Lavermicocca of inforcer hosts. The session covers why the industry averages 6% EBITDA, client segments and vertical specialization, advisory work at $300 to $500 an hour, 12 solution categories and the value streams behind them, markup versus gross margin, and when to build, acquire or partner.

Key takeaways

1

Profitability is a bigger problem than growth. Canalys put average managed services growth at around 13%, but the industry average is 6% EBITDA, and at any one time 25% of technology services businesses are breaking even or losing money.

2

Most churn is clients looking for more mature partners. About 40% of the churn James sees comes from closures, owner exits, insourcing and cost cutting. The other 60% is clients moving to partners who can advise on governance, risk and compliance and digital transformation.

3

Advisory work is worth far more than tech work. Partners have to stop giving advice away for free. Done properly, advisory work tied to client business outcomes bills at $300 to $500 an hour, against $100 to $200 for technical work.

4

Markup and gross margin are not the same. Many partners think they run a 20% gross margin when they have only applied a 20% markup, which is about 16% gross margin. Different value streams and solutions need their own pricing methodology.

5

Specialization works once you stop thinking locally. Partners once served anyone within a one to two hour drive. A vertical like professional engineering might offer 10 nearby firms but thousands across the state, country and region, and none need you next door.
