AI Readiness and Legal Compliance: Practical Strategies for MSPs in the Age of Copilot

MSP WEBINAR · ON-DEMAND · 59 MINS

Frederick Bendzius-Drennan, VP of AI Transformation, inforcer; Kim Simmonds, CEO and Founder, Cloud Contracts 365

Frederick Bendzius-Drennan, VP of AI Transformation at inforcer, explains why Copilot readiness is as much a data governance and legal problem as a technical one, joined by lawyer Kim Simmonds, CEO and Founder of Cloud Contracts 365. The session covers shadow AI, readiness from use cases to rollout planning, and key controls: Conditional Access, MFA and Microsoft Purview. Kim Simmonds sets out the three high-risk legal areas (data privacy, intellectual property and confidentiality) and the policies and contracts MSPs should update.

Key takeaways

1

Customers will adopt AI with or without you. A Microsoft report cited in the session found 75% of people already use AI at work. Without a sanctioned option, staff can sign up for tools with a personal email account and start putting business data into them.

2

Copilot inherits the tenant's existing security model. Copilot uses the permissions, Conditional Access, Defender, endpoint and SharePoint configurations already in place, so a well-managed tenant shrinks the project work needed when a customer asks for Copilot.

3

Data governance is likely the biggest growth area. Security and technical readiness are now standard managed service work. The growth is in knowing where sensitive data lives, applying Purview sensitivity labels and data loss prevention, and managing old SharePoint data that degrades Copilot answers.

4

Shadow AI magnifies three high-risk legal issues. Kim Simmonds names data privacy, intellectual property and confidentiality as the core risks, and all three are worse when nobody knows which AI tools staff are using or what they are inputting.

5

Agent IP must be settled in the contract. When an MSP builds agents for clients, contracts should separate bespoke client work from reusable know-how. Otherwise IP the MSP believes it owns can leak and hurt the business's valuation at exit.
